‘Tenet’

AUGUST 31 UPDATE: After nearly six months without a wide new Hollywood release due the the pandemic, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet launched on more than 20,000 screens in 41 territories including Canada, grossing a confirmed $53.6m over the weekend.

UPDATED: Playing in cinemas with capacity restrictions, Tenet led the way in the UK on $7m (£5.3m) from 3,116 screens for 74% market share.

Next was France on $6.8m (€5.7m) from 1,070 for 68% share, followed by South Korea on $5.1m (Won 6bn) on 2,228 for close to 80% share, and Germany on $4.5m (€3.8m) from 1,955 for nearly 60% market share.

Nolan’s sci-fi earned around $37m from 32 markets in the Europe/Middle East and African region and opened top in every one.

It scored the biggest Nolan debut in eight countries including Holland, Ukraine and Hungary, the biggest industry debut in Saudi Arabia on $1.5m from 97 screens, and the second biggest Hollywood launch in Estonia, where the film was partially shot, with $446,000,

IMAX generated $5m from 248 screens in 38 markets.

John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Michael Caine and Kenneth Branagh star in the time-bending thriller.

Inception 10 Year Anniversary generated $3.1m from 6,873 screens in 22 markets. Nolan’s sci-fi thriller opened in China on $2.9m, resulting in a $7.3m running total.

Family animation Scoob! grossed $1.3m on 2,728 screens in 18 markets in release to boost the overall tally to $18.5m. Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone 3D added $1.2m in China, where the fantasy adventure stands at $26.4m.

SONY PICTURES RELEASING INTERNATIONAL

Little Women debuted in China on $4.7m over six days (the drama earned a 9.0 rating on Maoyan and 8.1 on Douban) as the international haul climbed to $108.5m and worldwide $216.6m.

Padre No Hay Más Que Uno 2 (Father There Is Only One 2) has become Spain’s highest grossing film of the year with a local tally of $11.7m. The comedy dropped 4% in its fifth session and added $700,000.

WALT DISNEY STUDIOS MOTION PICTURES INTERNATIONAL

20th Century Studios’ The New Mutants opened in 10 material markets this weekend, including France, Spain, Belgium, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand as well as previews in the UK ($300,000 for third place), earning an estimated $2.9m.

France generated $1.1m since Wednesday and fourth place. It is estimated that more than 90% of national sites are currently open. Capacity restrictions are in force.

Spain delivered $500,000 in five days and the film ranked third. It is estimated that 80% of national sites are currently open. Cinema capacity is restricted to around 75% of normal capacity.

Taiwan produced $400,000 in third place. It is estimated that 99% of national sites are currently open. No capacity restrictions are currently mandated.

The New Mutants opened at number two in Thailand, and number three in Belgium and Poland. It opens next weekend in 20 material markets including Italy, UK, Russia, Australia and Mexico.
