JANUARY 14 UPDATE: Star Wars: The Force Awakens has reached $957.9m and was poised on Thursday night to overtake the Harry Potter finale and become the fifth biggest international release in history.

Star Wars The Force Awakens

Heading into its fifth weekend the space opera stood at $1.78bn worldwide factoring in $822.8m in North America and was due to overtake the $960.5m marker laid down by Harry Potter And The Deadthly Hallows: Part 2 in 2011.

The Force Awakens stands a chance of overtaking Titanic’s $2.19bn final worldwide tally and end its run as the second biggest global release of all time.

However Avatar’s remarkable $2.79bn score achieved by 2010 is a record too far given for the Star Wars release given that it has not taken off in China as executives had hoped.

When adjusted to inflation Titanic ranks as the champion of the modern era on $3.182bn while Avatar has grossed $3.033bn in real terms.

However both bow down to 1939 smash Gone With The Wind, which ranks as the biggest release in inflation-adjusted history on $6.782bn.

The Force Awakens stands at $70.8m after less than a week in China and could end up in the $150m-$175m region.

It has amassed $163.4m in the UK, $96m in Germany, $77.4m in France and $70.4m in Japan.
