Tyler Perry pulled of his second number one launch of the year as Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself opened top through Lionsgate on an estimated $24m.
The prolific Perry revives his Madea character in the film, which also stars Taraji P Henson. Perry’s previous number one lunch this year came in February with Madea Goes To Jail.
Meanwhile 9, the animated feature from Shane Acker, launched in second place though Focus Features and took $15.3m over five days.
Meanwhile Warner Bros’ Antarctica-set thriller Whiteout with Kate Beckinsale was a washout in seventh place on $5.1m and Summit’s horror remake Sorority Row hardly fared much better on $5.3m in sixth.
In third place Inglourious Basterds, released in North American through The Wenstein Company, crossed $100m as $6.5m raised the tally to $104.3m in its fourth weekend. Quentin Tarantino’s film is due to cross $100m overseas through Universal/UPI on Monday and stands at $203.3m worldwide.
District 9 in place stands at $108.5m after five weekends and is released in North America through TriStar.
Next weekend’s wide releases are: Fox’s horror comedy Jennifer’s Body that launched at Toronto International Film Festival and stars Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried; Sony’s animated family film Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs; Universal’s romantic comedy Love Happens with Jennifer Aniston and Aaron Eckhart; and Warner Bros’ drama The Informant!, which stars Matt Damon and is fresh from its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
