The studio continued to sweep aside all before it on Wednesday as executives announced an industry-high $2.113bn with four months still to go.
The latest running total overtook the previous best of $2.105bn set by Warner Bros in 2009.
Key drivers for the year-to-date have been Jurassic World on $639.8m, Furious 7 on $351m, Universal and Illumination’s Minions on $321.1m, Pitch Perfect 2 on $183.8m and Fifty Shades Of Grey on $166.2m.
Current number one release Straight Outta Compton has amassed $116.8m after 12 days in release.
Still to come this year are Steve Jobs, Venice opener Everest, Legendary-Universal’s Crimson Peak and The Visit, among others.
