Goran Rusinovic’s Buick Riviera, a co-production between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, was the big winner in the competition section of the 14th annual Sarajevo Film Festival which closed on Saturday night.
The drama won the Heart of Sarajevo for best film and the best actor award shared by its two leading men Slavko Stimac and Leon Lucev who play a Bosniak and a Serb who meet in the US many years after the war and lock into a psychological struggle of recriminations and old enmities.
Buick Riviera also won the FIPRESCI jury prize announced on Friday night.
A special jury prize went to Klaus Handl’s March from Austria, a story of families striving to overcome the inexplicable joint suicide of three young men.
Ayca Damagaci, who won the best actress prize at Istanbul International Film Festival this year, won the same prize here for playing herself in Huseyin Karabey’s popular My Marlon And Brando.
The jury was composed of Turkish film-maker Nuri Bilge Ceylan, UK director Hugh Hudson, Croatian actress Marija Skaricic, Match Factory chief Michael Weber and Deborah Young, the artistic director of the Taormina Film Festival.
English producer Cat Villiers, who has worked in the region on titles such as Before The Rains and No Man’s Land, won a special Heart Of Sarajevo award.
The short film winner was Ivan Ramdan’s six minute 3-D animated film Tolerantia from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The film also won the Prix UIP which automatically enters it for the European Film Academy (EFA) best short award.
The short film jury was composed of Fortissimo Films co-president Michael J Werner, Bosnian artist Sejla Kameric and Pusan Film Festival programmer Jay Jeon.
Documentary film winner was Boris Despodov’s Corridor #8 about the relationship between the Balkan states.
The jury was composed of Guadalajara Film Festival director Jorge Sanchez, Swiss film-maker Michael Beltrami and Bosnian film-maker Dzemal Sabic.
The CICAE Award, presented by the International Confederation Of Art Cinemas, was presented to Kornel Mundruczo’s Delta which played in competition at Cannes this year.
