Busan’s Asian Project Market (APM) has announced this year’s line-up including films from directors Brillante Mendoza, Vimukthi Jayasundara, Yeon Sang-ho and July Jung.
Winner of the 2005 Cannes Film Festival Camera d’or, Vimukthi Jayasundara (The Forbidden Land) will present Sri Lankan project Hair Of The Dog That Bit You.
The drama is about a female tourist guide’s loss of memory and identity, and her struggle to come to terms with what is left of her life and an unknown future.
Cannes 2009 Best Director winner Brillante Mendoza (Kinatay) has Philippines-France-Germany co-production Fowl in the APM line-up.
The story follows Ramon, a Filipino contract worker working at Singapore Post. When his wife Jenny suddenly dies, he has to travel back to the Philippines with her as if she were one of the many parcels he is so used to handling.
Korean directors include July Jung, the Lee Chang-dong protégé whose A Girl At My Door debuted in Cannes this year, and Yeon Sang-ho, the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) regular known for his gritty animations The King of Pigs and The Fake.
Other directors returning to Busan include Bangladeshi filmmaker Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, whose Television was BIFF’s closing film in 2012, Filipino director Hannah Espia (Transit), Indonesian filmmaker Joko Anwar (Joni’s Promise), Cambodian-French director Davy Chou (Golden Slumbers), Tibetan filmmaker Pema Tsedan (Old Dog), and Thai directors Pen-ek Ratanaruang (Ploy), Nonzee Nimibutr (Distortion) and Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit (Mary Is Happy, Mary Is Happy).
Returning Korean directors include Roh Gyeong-tae (Land Of Scarecrows) and Shin Su-won, whose Pluto drew attention at its premiere at BIFF 2012 and subsequently travelled to other fests including Edinburgh and Berlin as well as getting a commercial release in London.
The line-up also includes Berlinale Talent Campus alumnus Firas Khoury’s Palestinian project The Flag, about a rebellious 17-year-old struggling against the constraints of Palestinian society and the Israeli regime. Cannes 2013 Jury Prize winner Hany Abu-Assad, who directed Omar, is attached as producer.
APM 2014 will run Oct 6-8 during the Asian Film Market, Oct 5-8, at the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center (BEXCO).
