Fortissimo Films is continuing its foray into Indian cinema by picking up international rights outside Indian territories to Dev Benegal’s Road, Movie.
Produced by renowned US producers Susan B. Landau (An Ideal Husband) and Ross Katz (Lost In Translation) for The Indian Film Company and Studio 18, the film follows a young man driving across India in an antique Chevy with two old film projectors in the back.
Abhay Deol stars along with Tannishtha Chatterjee and Satish Kaushik, who both starred in 2007 UK production Brick Lane. It was written as well as directed by Benegal, who sparked a wave of independent filmmaking inIndia with his debut English, August (1994), and whose second film Split Wide Open (1999) premiered at Venice.
The deal marks the first time that Fortissimo has represented a Hindi-language feature, although earlier in the market it announced that it has picked up Hindi documentary Children Of The Pyre.
The company’s push into India highlights the increasing international interest in Indian films following the critical and commercial success of Slumdog Millionaire.
