Nineteen year old Canadian director Xavier Dolan swept the Directors’ Fortnight prizes in Cannes Friday night for I Killed My Mother.
The film, which Rezo is handling for international sales, took the Art Cinema prize, the Regards Jeunes award and the SACD trophy. Special mention went to Felix van Groeningen’s La Merditude Des Choses, while the Europa Cinemas Label nod was given to Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel’s La Pivellina.
The short film Montparnasse by Mikhael Hers was awarded the SFR prize, which is given to the most audacious short film in the Fortnight selection.
Meanwhile, Critics’ Week chose Nassim Amaouche’s Adieu Gary as its Grand Prize winner. The SACD prize went to Lost Persons Area by Caroline Strubbe. Whisper With The Wind from Iraq’s Shahram Alidi won the ACID/CCAS support prize, the OFAJ/TV5 Monde award and the Critics’ Week Regards Jeunes award.
Short films to take prizes in the sidebar were Seeds Of The Fall by Patrik Eklund and Logorama from Francois Alaux, Ludovic Houplain and Herve de Crecy. The Critics Week Regards Jeunes award.
