Ex-Intandem chief Gary Smith resurfaces with Blue Ocean

The LA-based company, which he heads alongside Jeremy Wall, is moving head with one of the films that Smith developed in his time at Intandem, Gil Junger’s $10 million 10 Things I Hate About Life.

This has been financed through British equity and EIS, the Californian tax credit, a few pre-sales and some gap financing.

The film had shot for two weeks but was postponed because star Evan Rachel Wood was pregnant. Shooting will resume in November. Sales are being handled by Howard Kaplan at Fusion Films.

Blue Ocean media aims to emphasize marketing and social media activities alongside production but won’t be involved directly in sales. It will actively promote young talent.

Smith’s new company has several other projects in development. Among these is low budget horror Terrortory, a Bermuda Triangle-style yarn set in the aftermath of a deadly plane crash.

Also on Blue Ocean’s slate is thriller First Person Shooter about a video game expert who is recruited by the South American mob as an assassin. They plant chips in the back of his neck so they can control his actions.

Alongside his activities at Blue Ocean, Smith is also a partner in new venture Vumanity. This is an online portal that gathers up content, edits it and adds graphics, allowing iPod and smart phones. Users can record and post their own ‘TV chat shows’ instantaneously and post them on line.

The company is setting up a greeting card app Vugreeting. Vumanity is setting up its own film channel where it will have specialist content exploring every aspect of film finance. A sports channel is also planned.
