Paddington, Mood Indigo, I Give It A Year, Serena and King of Soho lead sales pack.
StudioCanal is reporting a 50% increase in deals compared to Berlin, previously the biggest market in the company’s history, with titles Paddington, Mood Indigo, I Give it a Year, Serena, King of Soho leading the way.
“The support and trust we have received here means a lot to us and has allowed for an extraordinary growth,” says Harold van Lier, EVP, international distribution.
The company reported strong interest in the upcoming Paddington adaptation. Harry Potter producer David Heyman stopped by StudioCanal early on in Cannes to present the project in its first market outing.
On the basis of the script and a teaser image, the family-oriented picture pre-sold to Russia (Volga), Benelux (Belga), Italy (Eagle), Switzerland (Frenetic), Middle East (Gulf), Poland (Monolith) and the rest of Europe went to EEAP + Blitz.
Suzanne Bier’s Serena also racked up sales with StudioCanal showing first photos from the production, which is currently shooting. The film was picked up in Russia (Daro/Cascade),
Italy (Eagle), Poland (Monolith) and Turkey (Mars). The only remaining big territories to sell are Japan, Korea and Australia.
King of Soho also sold well. On the basis of a first promo, the film was acquired for Korea (Timestory), Benelux (Wild Bunch), Russia (Paradise), Australia (Madman) and Poland (ITI). The company also reported strong American interest.
Working Title’s I Give it a Year continued to ramp up sales.
Alongside early sales to eOne for Canada, Benelux and Canada, Scandinavia (Svensk) and Russia (Daro/Cascade), previously announced on Screen, the picture also sold to Korea (Timestory), Switzerland (Impulse) and Eastern Europe (ITI and EEAP).
Michel Gondry’s Mood Indigo also prompted strong interest, with the director stopping by the market to present the project which is currently shooting. Phantom picked up rights for Japan.
On the documentary side, Liz Garbus’ Marilyn Monroe’s Fragments was sold to Benelux (Belga), Australia (Madmen), Japan (Showgate) and Russia (Volga). StudioCanal reported strong US interest too.
