London based The Works has sold The Cove to new distribution venture Drei Freunde for Germany..
The company, which is owned by German exhibitor Heinz Lochmann, is planning an October release.
The documentary has also been sold to Madman Entertainment for Australia and New Zealand and the company is planning a theatrical release in September. Canadian rights have gone to Maple Pictures.
It will go out in cinemas in the US in July through Roadside and Lionsgate.
Winner of the audience award for best documentary at this year’s Sundance and Hot Docs film festivals, The Cove is a thriller with first time director Louie Psihoyos at the helm.
The film follows Richard O’Barry, an internationally recognized authority on dolphin training and high-tech dive team on a mission to discover the truth about the international dolphin capture trade as practiced in Taji, Japan.
