Zonad , the new feature from director John Carney, begins principal photography hot on the heels of Carney's Sundance award-winning Once's critical and commercial success in the US. Carney is also signed to direct Town House for Fox in LA and New England in the Spring.

Written by John Carney and his brother Kieran, the comedy centres on a convict who hides out in a village in rural Ireland and fools locals by pretending to be from outer space. Starring Simon Delaney, who also appeared in Carney's Irish TV series Bachelor's Walk, Zonad was given a low-key pilot production four years ago with Cillian Murphy in the leading role.

Produced by Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe and John McDonnell, Zonad is financed by Element Pictures and the Irish Film Board. The film is shooting in and around Wicklow and will be post-produced at Screen Scene in Dublin.

Element Pictures' new distribution arm aims to release in Ireland next year. Run by Audrey Sheils, former Account Director for Empire Design and Marketing Director for Metrodome Films, Element Pictures' first release on October 5 will be Lenny Abrahamson's Garage which premiered in the Director's Fortnight at Cannes in May.
