Hong Kong’s Celestial Pictures has become one of the first local studios to make films available on Apple’s iTunes Store.
Celestial will make select titles from its Shaw Brothers library available on the platform, including Behind The Yellow Line, starring Leslie Cheung, The 36th Chamber Of Shaolin and Out Of The Dark.
The iTunes Store was launched this July in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. Previously movies had only been available through the iTunes Store in Japan, Australia and New Zealand. China, India and Indonesia have so far not been included.
Meanwhile, Celestial Pictures confirmed that Ross Pollack, who has been CEO for the past three years, has quit the company. It’s understood that he has moved to management consultancy company Insigniam, where he will head the Asian practice.
Celestial, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malaysia’s Astro Holdings, spun off its TV channels into a joint venture, Celestial Tiger Entertainment (CTE), owned by Saban Capital Group and Lionsgate, earlier this year. Todd Miller was appointed president and chief operating officer of CTE.
