Quebecois filmmaker Eric Tessier (Sur Le Seuil) will make his English-language debut, directing the screenplay by Newfoundland writer Andrew Youngblood based on his own experiences surfing the frigid north Atlantic waters.
With a projected budget of $7m, the project will be a Quebec-Newfoundland coproduction uniting Cirrus producer Pierre Even with Barbara Doran and Lynne Wilson of St. John's-based Morag Films.
Surfing will be the second Quebec-Newfoundland coproduction for Morag following its collabroation with Montreal's Cinemaginaire on recently-released feature Young Triffie's Been Made Away With. Equinoxe Films is onboard to distribute in Canada.
Speaking exclusively to Screen International, Even describes the comedy as 'Waking Ned Divine meets La Grande Seduction,' a fish-out-of-water tale set in an isolated maritime community. A swarthy Italian surfer arrives in town and starts surfing the big waves to the perplexion and shrugs of the locals. But it turns out the newcomer is a smuggler waiting for a hundred kilo 'drop off.'
Morag's Doran said the film will shoot in the spring, 'although the surfers tell us the best surfing is in the autumn.'
Backers include Telefilm Canada, Quebec's SODEC and the Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corp.
