Control, which premiered in Cannes, has 10 nominations, including Best Independent British Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Newcomer (Sam Riley), and Best Screenplay.
Following closely behind were And When Did You Last See Your Father' with seven nominations, Hallam Foe with six, Eastern Promises with five, and Notes On A Scandal with four. (See full nominations below.)
The BIFA directors Johanna von Fischer and Tessa Collinson also announced that Ray Winstone will get this year's Richard Harris Award for Outstanding Contribution By An Actor.
The BIFAs pre-selection committee viewed more than 150 eligible films. To be considered, a film must be intended for theatricalrelease and had a public paid screening or UK festival screeningbetween Dec 1 2006 and Nov 30 2007. Films must have been majorityco-produced by a British company, British qualifying under DCMSguidelines or have more than half its financing from a British source.Films have to be budgeted under $16m and can't be solely funded by astudio.
This year's jury includes actors Hayley Atwell, Archie Panjabi, Kathy Burke, Tony Curran, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Matthew Macfadyen; directors Annie Griffin, Menhaj Huda, Neil Marshall and Peter Webber; LFF artistic director Sandra Hebron; producer Mark Herbert; cinematographer Brian Tufano; distributor Will Clarke and musician Nitin Sawhney.
Elliot Grove, founder of the BIFAs, said: 'As BIFA reaches its tenth year it is my hope that British filmmakers, whose work these Awards were set up to honour, continue to entertain, astound, delight and inspire and take their rightful place at the forefront of international independent cinema.'
The awards will be handed out Nov 28 at the Roundhouse in London, again hosted by actor James Nesbitt.
