Jean-Marc Vallee's C.R.A.Z.Y.and David Cronenberg's A HistoryOf Violence were among the titleslisted in the Toronto International Film Festival Group (TIFFG)'s annualCanada's Top Ten.
The yearly roll-call,published in alphabetical order as opposed to merit, honours achievement inCanadian film. Other titles include Deepa Mehta's Water, which has earned more than C$1m at the national boxoffice, and Canada's other Cannes 2005 competitor, Atom Egoyan's Where TheTruth Lies.
C.R.A.Z.Y has already blazed a trail across the Canadian map;it's the highest grossing local feature of the year and will represent Canadain the foreign language category at the 2006 Oscars.
The presence of A HistoryOf Violence is anomalous given thatthe production does not qualify as Canadian by any standards of funding orcultural indices, for example, top-line cast, key creative roles.
"It's anomalous in terms ofprecedent but not in terms of spirit," said TIFF programmer Steve Gravestock,in defense of the inclusion of the film. "It's far too significant anachievement by a Canadian director to ignore. It's not as if spent his careershooting films elsewhere. He's shot nearly all his films in Toronto. Itwouldn't be in line with the announcement of what this event is about."
Gravestock also pointed outthat "Deepa's film [Water] is considered Canadian but shot in another languagein Sri Lanka."
The Top Ten selection wasdetermined by a panel representing a cross-section of the Canadian filmcommunity including producers Gabriella Martinelli of Capri Films and StephenHegyes of Brightlight Pictures, filmmakers Andrea Dorfman and Velcrow Ripperand film critic Bruce Kirkland of The Toronto Sun
