The Danish feature debut from Swedish-born Anders Gustafsson, Scratch (Bagland), has been selected as the first of six for the Berlin Film Festival's new youth film sidebar 14plus, an extension of the Kinderfilmfest.
Though the film won't be released locally until December 25, it has already picked up a number of awards including best actress at the Copenhagen International Film Festival for newcomer Stephanie Leon.
The film tells of the 17-year-old Mille (Leon), who has to find out what she wants to do with her life, how she can escape the concrete ghetto, her alcoholic mother and which boy she prefers.
The film is produced by Birgitte Skov of Nimbus Film, and written by Kim Leona (The Bench, The Inheritance) and shot by cinematographer Manuel Claro (Reconstruction).
