Danish director Susanne Bier will have a second chance at the Academy Award for best foreign-language film, after the Danish Oscar committee yesterday [23] decided to submit her eleventh feature, In A Better World (Hævnen), as Denmark’s candidate for the nominations this year. Bier’s After the Wedding (Efter Brylluppet) was the Danish ticket in 2007.

 
When internationally launched at the Toronto International Film Festival, In A Better World had already sold more than 50 territories through TrustNordisk, including the US and Canada, where it will be released by Sony Pictures Classics in the beginning of next year.
 
Almost four weeks after its Danish premiere (August 26) it has reached 265,000 admissions, to exceed Toy Story 3 and become number one in the local charts. Bier’s previous feature, Brothers (Brodre), totalled 430,000 tickets domestically.
 
“Another strong entry in the canon of intense human dramas from director Bier and screenwriter Anders Thomas Jensen — a gripping meditation on the choices between pacificism and violence,” wrote Mike Goodridge in his Screen International review.
 
Produced by Sisse Graum Jorgensen for Zentropa Entertainments, In A Better World explores the friendship between two boys which effects both their own and their famillies’ lives, juxtaposing life in a refugee camp in Africa with the humdrum of the Danish provincial idyll.
 
Staring Mikael Persbrandt, Trine Dyrholm, Ulrich Thomsen, Markus Rygaard and William Johnk Nielsen, the film follows Bier’s US venture with DreamWorks, Things We Lost In The Fire starring Halle Berry and Benicio Del Toro.
 
Bier, writer Jensen and producer Jørgensen are preparing a yet untitled, uncast romantic comedy for Zentropa – the story of a beautiful hairdresser, just cured from cancer. who falls in love with a man on her way to her daughter’s wedding in Italy. Unfortunately he already has a girlfriend.
 
The Oscar nominations will be announced on January 25, 2011.
