Detective Dee, Assassins lead race for Hong Kong Film Awards

They were closely followed by Wilson Yip’s Ip Man 2 with 10 nominations, while Dante Lam’s The Stool Pigeon racked up eight nods and Derek Kwok and Clement Cheng’s Gallants took seven.

All five pictures were nominated for best film and best director. Also scoring high is Ivy Ho’s Crossing Hennessy which was recognised for best screenplay, new director, actor (Jacky Cheung), actress (Tang Wei) and two supporting actress nods (Mimi Chu and Paw Hee Ching).

While Detective Dee, Reign Of Assassins and Ip Man 2 are big-budget films aimed at both mainland and Hong Kong audiences, Gallants and Crossing Hennessy reflect the recent trend among some local filmmakers to return to smaller Hong Kong-style films.

The ceremony will be held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on April 17.
