The Cinema Guild has picked up US rights to Jeff Malmberg’s SXSW grand jury best documentary winner Marwencol.
Film Sales Company president Andrew Herwitz negotiated the deal with Ryan Krivoshey of the Cinema Guild, which plans an autumn release in theatres.
Marwencolcharts the remarkable story of Mark Hogancamp, a man who emerged from a coma following a vicious attack and had little memory of his previous life.
Seeking solace, he built Marwencol, a miniature World War II-era town in his backyard populated with characters including his attackers. The project attracts the attention of a prestigious gallery, which forces Hogancamp to make an important choice.
The film is currently screening in official selection at Hot Docs.
“Marwencolis like nothing you’ve ever seen,” Krivoshey said. “It not only captures the awakening of a bona fide artist; it brings to life a fictional universe with enough action, intrigue and romance to rival anything coming out of Hollywood this summer. We are very excited to be working with Jeff and his team on the release of his amazing film.”
The Cinema Guild’s upcoming releases include Jacques Rivette’s Around A Small Mountain this summer. Previous releases include Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Ilisa Barbash’s Sweetgrass, Claire Denis’ 35 Shots Of Rum, Agnes Varda’s The Beaches Of Agnes, Andrew Bujalski’s Beeswax, Ellen Kuras’ The Betrayal, and Margaret Brown’s The Order Of Myths.
