D Films has acquired all Canadian rights to Monsters from Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures.
The feature directing debut of award-winning special effects expert Gareth Edwards, Monsters was picked up by Toronto-based D Films following its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in March.
The film follows a journalist who agrees to escort an American tourist through a part of Mexico that has been quarantined after an alien invasion.
Edwards also wrote and edited the film, and created the special effects. Allan Niblo and James Richardson of UK-based Vertigo Films produced and Scoot McNairy (In Search of a Midnight Kiss) and Whitney Able (All the Boys Love Mandy Lane) star.
The deal was negotiated by D Films president and CEO Jim Sherry and Magnolia Pictures international sales executive Laird Adamson.
