UK distributor nabs Joshua Oppenheimer’s acclaimed documentary about Indonesia’s murderous 1960’s paramilitary.
Dogwoof has picked up UK distribution rights to Joshua Oppenheimer’s well-received CPH: DOX and Berlin-winning documentary The Act of Killing.
The deal was brokered by Oli Harbottle of Dogwoof with Philippa Kowarsky of Cinephil. The film is slated for a summer release.
Executive produced by Errol Morris, Werner Herzog and André Singer, Oppenheimer’s acclaimed documentary charts the story of the brutal Indonesian paramilitary group the Pancasila Youth who were among those who, in the 1960s, participated in the murder and torture of more than one million ethnic Chinese, intellectuals and alleged Communists.
When Oppenheimer asks the group to re-enact these murders in any genre they desire they initially take up the challenge enthusiastically, but finally begin to feel remorse.
