The British Video Association says the first quarter of 2010 was strong for the UK home entertainment market, up 31% compared to last year.
That growth was due in part to Blu-Ray growth (up 50% compared to the first quarter of 2009) and Easter falling a week earlier in 2010. The music genre was up 42% over 2009, thanks mostly to Michael Jackson’s This Is It. Children’s titles climbed 38% driven by Up.
Hannah Conduct, marketing manager at the British Video Association, said: “While it is fantastic to see such strong growth in market volumes in the run up to Easter, the performance of Blu-ray is especially impressive. Growing sales show that the benefits of the format - higher picture quality, superior sound, and an ever-expanding range of titles - are better understood than ever before.”
The top-selling Blu-ray titles of the quarter were The Hurt Locker,Up and 2012.
In DVD sales, The Twilight Saga - New Moon continued to lead the chart. Topping the TV DVD chart was BBC comedy series Gavin & Stacey - Series 3.
