FilmBuff, the digital distribution label operated by Cinetic Rights Management, will release the documentary Pelada in June to coincide with the Fifa World Cup in South Africa.
Peladais the Brazilian term for a pick-up game and premiered at SXSW. The documentary is an affectionate homage to the global appeal of football and the fans around the world who live for their impromptu street games. Ryan White directed.
“We’re thrilled to bring Pelada to VOD audiences in America, as we believe it’s a great film that captures an undeniable energy around the world,” FilmBuff’s head of programming Matt Dentler. “While it’s required viewing for all soccer fans, the film also works for fans of documentary films and international stories.”
Pelada will debut on cable systems across North America on June 7. Shortly after, it will launch on broadband platforms such as iTunes and Amazon with more to come through the rest of the year.
“We hope this movie can be seen as The Endless Summer of soccer, a journey around the globe told through the lens of a shared passion,” White said. “We think soccer players will love its spirit, but the human stories - stories that rarely get told in a world dominated by high-paid athletes - will be an experience that non-soccer fans will connect to just as much.”
