VOD service MUBI is in Cannes with 2010 Palme d’Or winner Apichatpong Weerasethakul to launch 20-minute short Ashes, shot by Weerasethakul on a new-model hand-cranked analogue film camera it designed with analogue specialists Lomography.

Meditative short Ashes, a contemplation on love, pleasure, and the destruction of memory, screened at the festival yesterday and will be available to stream on MUBI today.

Efe Cakarel’s expanding VOD service is currently in the process of rolling out a new subscription-based business model structured around a curated, rotating library of 30 films per month. The service will offer lower price points as well as a “Film of the Day.”

The rollout begins in Turkey, where monthly subscription will cost as little as 2euro, with Scandinavia and UK slated for the upgrade later this year, followed by Russia, Poland, Mexico, Brazil, and China in 2013.

To herald the company’s new direction, the service has struck a partnership with Nordisk Film & TV Fund, which will guarantee subscribers at least 20 films from the region. In some territories titles will be free.

The outfit has also struck a deal with Sony Google TV to be pre-installed in its devices. The platform is due to roll out this year.
