EXCLUSIVE: UK distributor picks up Cannes competition title and FIPRESCI winner In the Fog.
Fresh off the company’s biggest theatrical hit with Cannes 2011 pick-up Once Upon A Time in Anatolia (ticking towards £272,000 from an opening screen count of only 14 - which it subsequently doubled), UK distributor New Wave Films has acquired another Cannes competition entry in the shape of In the Fog from The Match Factory.
Sergei Loznitsa’s FIPRESCI prize-winner charts the story of a man wrongly accused of collaboration during the second world war.
Loznitsa’s previous effort My Joy was also in competition at Cannes.
As previously announced New Wave also picked up Abbas Kiarostami’s Japan-set competition entry Like Someone in Love at the market from MK2.
New Wave’s Robert Beeson told Screen: “We are very pleased to be bringing this extraordinarily powerful film [In the Fog] to British audiences, and to renew a link with Abbas Kiarostami which goes back to Through the Olive Trees over 15 years ago.”
The outfit releases well-received documentary Nostalgia for the Light in July.
