Open Road has taken a major independent production off the table, acquiring US rights to StudioCanal’s action thriller by Pierre Morel starring Sean Penn.

Joel Silver, Andrew Rona and Penn produced and Adrian Guerra and Peter McAleese are the executive producers.

The Gunman centres on a former Special Forces soldier and military contractor suffering from PTSD who tries to connect with his lost love while on a mission to clear his name.

Javier Bardem, Idris Elba, Ray Winstone, Mark Rylance and Jasmine Trinca round out the powerhouse cast.  

The project is based on Jean-Patrick Manchette’s novel The Prone Gunman.

Morel directed Taken and Distict B13.
