The distributor plans to release Chen Kaige’s revenge tale in the US later this year.

Vice-president of acquisitions Peter Goldwyn first saw the action epic when it premiered in the Berlinale and subsequently closed a deal with Easternlight Films.

Sacrifice grossed more than $30m in China and is based on an old Chinese play about the sole survivor of a massacre who grows up to seek retribution against the general who killed his family. Ge You and Wang Xue Qi star and Chen Hong and Qin Hong produced.

“I was completely mesmerised by this film - the action, drama and setting were captivating.” Goldwyn said. “It is beautifully directed by Chen Kaige with extraordinary performances by Ge You and Wang Xue Oi. As soon as I watched it, I knew we had to have it.”
