The 3D underwater thriller will be released in IMAX from Feb 4, making it the busiest first quarter ever for IMAX.
Sanctum, the 3D underwater thriller executive produced by James Cameron, will be released for a special two-week run in IMAX 3D from Feb 4, 2011.
The release is simultaneous with Universal’s global launch.
The film, directed by Alister Grierson, was shot off Australia’s Gold Coast. The story, about underwater cave divers on a treacherous expedition, stars Richard Roxburgh, Ioan Gruffudd and Rhys Wakefield.
The film uses 3D techniques that Cameron pioneered on Avatar.
“A film executive produced by James Cameron using his own 3D technology deserves a partner in IMAX which will offer audiences a fully immersive experience with Sanctum,” said Universal Pictures Chairman Adam Fogelson. “We’re thrilled that it is joining Fast Five in next year’s IMAX offerings from Universal.”
IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond noted: “This special two-week run provides IMAX theatres with more films in the first quarter than ever before, highlighting the flexibility in programming created by our digital network.”
