Spanish shorts distributor and sales outfit Freak is expanding into international feature sales.
The new element will be led by existing staff, MD Millán Vázquez and sales manager Cela Ortega.
The company’s first two acquisitions are Bernardo Arellano’s Between Night And Day [pictured], which was in competition at this year’s San Sebastian Film Festival, and Celia Novis’ genre documentary On Vampyres and Other Symptoms.
Speaking to Screen, Vazques said: “After 11 years dealing with short films we want to move forward and retain the relationship with our directors’ feature-film debuts. Although we are close to the directors we have worked with on short films, our intention is to support new talents in filmmaking in any part of the world.”
“We’ll be looking for good independent films of any language or genre. We are working with some talented new directors for 2012-13 feature film releases. We want to make an individual strategy for each film, which is why we look forward to managing only 10-15 films per year,” he continued.
