Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions (SPWA) made the announcement today [20] over US and Canadian rights to The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, which is set to premiere in Sundance this weekend [22].
Sony Pictures Classics, whose involvement with the project was reported on Screendaily last week, will open the film in North America in April.
The Greatest Movie Ever Sold takes a typically playful look at the world of product placement, marketing and advertising through a film that Spurlock has openly declared to be financed entirely by product placement, marketing and advertising.
Spurlock and Jeremy Chilnick wrote the screenplay and produced with Abbie Hurewitz through Spurlock’s production company Warrior Poets alongside Snoot Entertainment producers Keith Calder and Jessica Wu.
The deal was made by SPWA’s Scott Shooman and Michael Helfand with CAA.
“We are thrilled to continue Sony’s longstanding relationship with Morgan,” SPWA president Steve Bersch said. “He has made an extremely creative and original movie which we think audiences will really embrace.”
“Sony Pictures is the greatest distributor a film could have,” Spurlock added. “It’s a dream come true to work with Steve, Tom and Michael on this movie. Together, I think we’re going to break new ground.”
