The estimated weekend tally was a commendable result for a relatively unknown property starring Australia’s Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman.

Kenneth Branagh directed the exuberant adaptation about the arrogant Norse god and his mighty hammer. The film is days away from crossing $250m worldwide, having already amassed $176m overseas. Only Spider-Man and Iron Man from the Marvel stable have had better domestic launches on $114.8m in 2002 and $98.6m in 2008, respectively.

Universal’s global smash Fast Five ranks second in its weekend and stands at just under $140m and more than $320m globally after several weekends.

TriStar released the family drama Jumping The Broom in third place on $13.7m while Warner Bros’ rom-com Something Borrowed with Kate Hudson and Ginnifer Goodwin opened in fourth on $13.2m.

Horror tale Insidious ranks 11th on $50m for FilmDistrict after six weekends and the fledgling distributor’s Soul Surfer, released through TriStar, stands at $37m after five.

Summit Entertainment released Jodie Foster’s drama The Beaver starring Mel Gibson ahead of its out of competition screening in Cannes. The film grossed $104,000 from 22 in a mediocre limited debut. Samuel Goldwyn Films opened Roland Joffe’s adventure There Be Dragons on a lackluster $689,000 from 259.

Next weekend’s wide releases include: Universal’s comedy Bridesmaids produced by Judd Apatow and starring Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph; and Screen Gem’s supernatural horror Priest with Paul Bettany.
