Sundance Selects has confirmed its acquisition of all North American rights to Trishna, Michael Winterbottom’s India-set contemporary retelling of Tess Of The D’Urbevilles.
Freida Pinto stars as the tragic woman whose life is undone by ill-fated love and circumstance. Sundance Selects/IFC svp of acquisitions and production Arianna Bocco negotiated the deal with Bankside head of sales and acquisitions Stephen Kelliher.
Sundance Selects sister company IFC most recently collaborated with Winterbottom on The Trip and The Killer Inside Me.
MPI Media Group has taken all North American rights to Mathieu Demy’s drama Americano after the French production premiered in Toronto.
MPI plans a spring 2012 theatrical launch. Demy and Salma Hayek star in the tale of a man who travels to Tijuana to track down a woman linked to his late mother. MPI Media Group evp Greg Newman negotiated the deal with Mathieu Robinet of Bac Films.
Late on Wednesday Cohen Media Group announced it had picked up US rights from EuropaCorp to The Lady, Luc Besson’s biopic about Burmese pro-democracy figurehead Aung San Suu Kyi in a move that throws Michelle Yeoh into the best actress Academy Awards race.
The Lady premiered in Toronto earlier this week. EuropaCorp CEO Christophe Lambert and Cohen Media Group CEO Charles Cohen brokered the deal.
Cassian Elwes expects to close a domestic sale and one other territory on Hysteria, which premieres on Thursday night. Other titles in play include Friends With Kids, You’re Next, Ten Year and The Day.
