Arthouse Films has acquired all US rights to Lucy Walker’s Sundance and Berlinale audience award winner Waste Land.
The documentary charts renowned Brazilian artist Vik Muniz as he takes photographs of inhabitants of the world’s largest landfill site outside Rio and sells them to raise money for the people.
David Koh, Lilly Bright, and Stanley Buchthal brokered the deal on behalf of Arthouse Films and Curiously Bright Entertainment with Charlotte Mickie of E1 Entertainment and producer Angus Aynsley of Almega Projects.
The Almega Projects & O2 Filmes Production was a UK-Brazilian co-production. Hank Levine also served as producer and O2 Filmes’ Fernando Meirelles served as executive producer with Miel De Botton Aynsley, Jackie De Botton, and Andrea Barata Ribiero.
E1 Entertainment holds international rights and has concluded sales with Hopscotch in Australia, Hagi Film in Poland, and Midas Filmes in Portugal. E1 Entertainment will distribute in Canada and the UK and Downtown Filmes is the Brazilian distributor.
Arthouse plans a theatrical release later this year followed by a DVD and digital release in early 2011.
