Screenwriter and actor Don McKellar won the Canadian Screenwriting Award for Blindnessas the Writers Guild of Canada (WGC) celebrated the best of writing in Canadian film and television.
In the WGC feature film category, McKellar was competing against Paul Gross for Passchendaele and Michael McGowan for One Week, both of which premiered at Toronto 2008.
Adapted from Nobel Prize-winner Jose Saramago’s novel, directed by Fernando Meirelles and starring Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo alongside McKellar, the film premiered in competition at Cannes last year and was recut for Toronto.
In the feature documentary category, John Walker won for his film, Passage, a chronicle of Canada’s Northern Passage, certain to be a crucial shipping corridor should the arctic ice recede.
