Belgian director Bouli Lanners’ third feature, The Giants, has been awarded two prizes at this evening’s Directors’ Fortnight closing ceremony.
Both the SACD prize and the Art Cinema Award honored the film which recounts the adventure of two adolescent boys and their newfound friend. Screen called the film “a joyous heartwarmer with an endearing Mark Twain meets Ken Loach vibe.” Memento Films International is handling world sales on the title.
Also picking up a prize in the section is Breathing by Karl Markovics. The Label Europa Cinemas award was given to enhance the film’s promotion, circulation and theatrical run.
The Austrian title sees a young man serving time in a juvenile detention center who ends up working at the municipal morgue in Vienna. When he is faced with a dead woman who bears his family name, the incident sparks his search for his own mother. Films Distribution has international sales.
