In Berlin this weekend, Yellow Bird's Soren Staermose has revealed further details of the hugely ambitious roll-out plans for the film of Stieg Larsson's world bestseller The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, sold here by Zodiak International.

The film will be released theatrically in late February in Sweden and Denmark, then in March in Norway and Finland. UGC will release the film theatrically in France, BIM in Italy and Lumiere in Belgium. It is being screened to other buyers in Berlin.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was produced as both a theatrical feature and a two-part TV miniseries. Yellow Bird has also finished shooting two more films of the novels by the late Larsson which were made specifically for television with backing from Swedish TV, ZDF in Germany, Nordisk Film and TV2 in Norway.

Meanwhile Yellow Bird, which also produces the Swedish and UK TV films based on the Inspector Wallander stories, is in talks with international partners about a possible English-language film version of the Larsson stories.

'There is a lot of international interest in doing a big English version,' Staermose commented. He insisted that if this goes ahead will not be a straight remake of the Swedish film but will be conceived afresh from Larsson's books. It is conceivable that an English-language version could be shot in the US or Europe.

Yellow Bird will look to take an active part in any new version rather than simply sell on rights.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is directed by Niels Arden Oplev and stars Michael Nyqvist and Noomi Rapace. The cast also includes Lena Endre and David Dencik.
