Film Movement has acquired North American rights to The Dynamiter, which was part of last year’s Berlin official selection.
The film will get a New York theatrical opening in the second quarter of 2012 with a limited national roll-out and a day-and-date cable VOD premiere to follow.
The directorial debut of Mathew Gordon, the film, which features a non-professional cast and was shot on location in Mississippi, paints a portrait of a teenage boy’s life growing up in the rural South.
The Dynamiter won the jury prize at the Deauville festival and has been nominated for two Independent Spirit awards.
The acquisition was negotiated by Film Movement’s VP of acquisitions and distribution Rebeca Conget and Asher Goldstein of Traction Media on behalf of the filmmakers.
“This is a film that really grabs you and doesn’t let go, and you don’t even realize it until hours and days after you finish watching it. Matthew Gordon gets unforgettable performances from both the professional and unprofessional cast, and rural Mississippi never looked so gorgeous,” said Conget.
