E1 Entertainment will re-release Benoit Pilon’sThe Necessities Of Lifein the wake of the film’s success at last weekend’s Genie Awards. The film goes back into cinemas inToronto and Vancouver on April 10.
It earned Genies for Best Director, Best Screenplay for Bernard Emond, Best Actor for Natar Nugalaaq and Best Editing for Richard Comeau.
The film, Canada’s entry for this year’s foreign-language Oscar and winner of the Jutra Prize for Best Film, is currently on release across Canada via the Toronto International Film Festival Group’s Film Circuit. It was re-released in Quebec last weekend across Quebec. Releases are planned for Regina, Edmonton and a re-release in Winnipeg.
A double-prize winner at Montreal where it premiered last August, the film follows an Inuit hunter who is removed from his Arctic home to Quebec City for his health. Separated from his family and unable to communicate with hospital staff, he loses his will to live.
The film has followed a circuitous release. It opened in Quebec in August after Montreal and then went to the Film Circuit and then was released conventionally in Toronto on February 20, 2009. Its total gross across Canada to date is C$420,000.
