Six out of 10 screenings in 2010 were for European films
Europa Cinemas has announced that the 760 cinemas in its network last year devoted 60.6% of screenings to European films – up 1.7% on 2009.
Non-national European films also showed a slight increase, achieving a share of 36.4% of screenings. The share for US cinema declined by 2% to 30.8%, while cinema from the rest of the world remained stable with an 8% market share.
The figures were announced ahead of a meeting to be held in Cannes tomorrow (May 14) where Europa Cinemas will present the results to European commissioner Androulla Vassiliou and three members of the European Parliament: Doris Pack, Stavros Lambrinidis and Piotr Borys.
More than 61 million filmgoers visited Europa Cinemas/MEDIA theatres in 2010, resulting in takings of €370m. In 2011 the network is welcoming new members, enabling it to surpass the 2,000 screen mark with cinemas in 475 European cities.
