Shooting began today (October 15) in Hamburg on Soul Kitchen, Fatih Akin's first feature film since his European Film Award 2007 winning The Edge Of Heaven. The Match Factory will be handling international sales.
The film tells the story of beleaguered bar owner Zinos' attempts to keep his restaurant in business. Those appearing in Soul Kitchen are familiar from his previous films. Moritz Bleibtreu appeared In July and Solino and Birol Ünel in Head-On, while the female leads include Pheline Roggan from Chiko, and Dorka Gryllus from Irina Palm.
It is being produced by Akin and partner Klaus Maeck's own company Corazon International with broadcaster NDR, and in association with The Edge of Heaven co-producer Dorje Film and French outfit Pyramide Productions. Funding has come from Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein GmbH, Nordmedia Fonds, the German Federal Film Board (FFA) and the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF).
The film marks the third collaboration with sales agent The Match Factory after The Edge Of Heaven, and Akin's documentary Garbage In The Garden Of Eden (Der Muell im Garten Eden) which is currently in postproduction.
