Reece Cargan, through his company Bombito, is determined to shine a light on the next generation of queer UK talent, with a focus on intersectional LGBTQ+ stories.

Originally from Cumbria, Cargan has lived and worked in Scotland since 1999. He took back-office jobs on film and TV productions including Good Omens (Amazon), Shetland (ITV) and Elizabeth Is Missing (STV/BBC), and worked on commercials, immersing himself in production “to learn from my peers” while producing short films.

Cargan produced writer/director Jack Goessens’ 2021 documentary short Everyman with support from the BFI and Screen Scotland through the Scottish Documentary Institute’s Bridging the Gap programme. It won best short film at the Scottish Queer International Film Festival. He then secured finance from Creative Scotland’s Create:Inclusion fund to produce the Goessens-directed short Who I Am Now, bringing on board writer Michael Lee Richardson. Egypt‑born trans actor Adam Kashmiry appeared in both films.

Cargan is also producing Bircan Birol’s feature-length documentary Your Honour, about a Kurdish woman fighting to become the first openly transgender lawyer in Turkey, and produced animator Steven Fraser’s documentary short Prosopagnosia, about Fraser’s face blindness, through the Scottish Documentary Institute. Shortlisted for a Grierson prize this year, Prosopagnosia won the jury prize for mini doc at this year’s Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival.

In 2021 Cargan was selected for TorinoFilmLab and the BFI Network development programme. “The labs really fill in my knowledge gaps and boost contacts,” he says.

This year has seen Cargan represent Scotland at IFFR’s Rotterdam Lab and become the only UK producer selected for the EAVE Producers Workshop 2022 with his in-development feature A Good Spell, written by Richardson. Cargan is also developing Ghoul Friends for TV with creator Catherine Wignall and backing from Screen Yorkshire, a spooky tale involving a social-media sensation transplanted from Los Angeles to Yorkshire.
