Need to know: Cinemaundici was founded in 1998 by Luigi Musini, Roberto Cicutto (now president of the Biennale) and the late Italian filmmaker Ermanno Olmi. Through the years, the Musini family has remained the only owner of the company — Luigi Musini’s daughter Olivia Musini has worked for Cinemaundici since 2011 and became CEO in 2017. Moving between arthouse and more commercial projects such as Giovanni La Parola’s exploitation film My Body Will Bury You, in recent years Cinemaundici has also produced Francesco Munzi’s Black Souls (2014) and Alessio Cremonini’s On My Skin (2018), both of which premiered in Venice, with the latter acquired by Netflix. This year it was behind Paolo Taviani’s Leonora Addio, which premiered in Berlinale Competition in February. Despite having been in acquisition talks with larger global companies, Cinemaundici remains independent and focused on international co-productions.
Key personnel: Olivia Musini, managing director; Rita Favone, CFO; Giovanna Nicolai, head of production; Emilia Bandel, development and co-productions.
Incoming: Jasmine Trinca’s Marcel! will world premiere as a Special Screening in official selection, co-produced with France’s Totem Atelier and starring Alba Rohrwacher. It also has Alessio Cremonini’s second film Prophets, co-produced with Lucky Red, and Italian pop star Tommaso Paradiso’s directing debut Sulle Nuvole.
Olivia Musini says: “We want to maintain creative control and work side by side with the filmmakers; this is why Cinemaundici produces few projects per year, because it guarantees constant presence. For us the path to bigger projects is through international co-productions of English-language stories.”
