Need to know: EMU Films was established in 2012 and broke through with high-quality, low‑budget festival hits such as The Goob, Catch Me Daddy and Dirty God. As well as championing debut and second-feature filmmakers, EMU produced veteran UK filmmaker Terence Davies’ drama Benediction. The company is in post with Silver Haze, Sacha Polak’s follow-up to Dirty God, which EMU co-produced with Marleen Slot’s Netherlands-based Viking Film.
Key personnel: Michael Elliott, Jim Mooney, Walli Ullah, co-founders; Laia Senserrich, head of development; Deborah Aston, head of production; Louise Palmkvist Hansen, producer; Mary Carson, producer (docs).
Incoming: EMU has just wrapped on American Star, starring Ian McShane and directed by Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego, which is a co-production with Madrid-based Aqui y Alli Films. The company is partnering with the same Spanish team on Giovanni Maderna’s BFI-developed feature Pablo’s Battle. The fourth season of Seth Meyers’ mockumentary series Documentary Now!, with US partners Broadway Video, is in its final stages of shooting. Future projects include Rebecca Daly’s Haul, a UK-Ireland co-production in development with Film4 and Screen Ireland; The Man Who Stole Portugal, written by Richard Galazka, for which the company is seeking European production partners; and Simon Amstell’s Maria, with Independent Entertainment launching sales at Cannes.
Michael Elliott says:“We follow the stories we believe in and inevitably that has led us to like-minded filmmakers around the world. It’s important for independent producers to work together across borders, help each other finance and make films we’re passionate about, and connect to as large an audience as possible, whatever the platform.”
