Need to know: Warsaw-based production outfit Madants is led by a trio of very different women, specialises in co-production and knows how to work the international circuit. Founded in 2015 by Klaudia Smieja-Rostworowska and Beata Rzezniczek, who were joined in 2019 by Bogna Szewczyk, Madants produces independent films and boasts an impressive track record. Output includes Claire Denis’ High Life, starring Robert Pattinson and Juliette Binoche and shot partly in Poland; Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurdsson’s Under The Tree; Babis Makridis’ Pity; and Emir Baigazin’s The River, which premiered in Venice Horizons in 2018. Co-productions include Valdimar Johannsson’s Lamb, starring Noomi Rapace; Gabe Klinger’s Porto, which was executive produced by Jim Jarmusch; and Timur Makarevic’s Nothing But The Wind. In 2017, the company established distribution venture Madness Distribution for arthouse and edgier titles such as Janis Nord’s Foam At The Mouth, which was co-produced by Madants.
