Philip Glenister is ogled and a toddler nearly steals the show at the 21st WFTV Awards in London.
It was top marks for Miranda Hart hosting the glittery Women in Film and TV awards on Friday at London’s Park Lane Hilton — nailing that perfect mix of laughs and heart. To start, guests were treated to a medley from cast members of West End show Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Nevermind that it was the middle of the afternoon, clearly it was time to celebrate.
As usual it was a lively show, providing laughs and a few inspirational moments that got a few folks teary. I especially loved it when producer Andrea Calderwood thanked not only her family, but her network of friends who make life as a working mother possible.
Victoria Wood, the lifetime achievement award winner, was strangely (and disappointingly) absent. But there were plenty of other stars celebrating 21 years of the WFTV awards. They included presenters Imelda Staunton, Jennifer Saunders (looking very fab as AbFab is set to return), Edith Bowman, Deborah Meaden, Kirsty Wark, Kathy Burke and winners including Jo Brand. Sue Perkins drew laughs when she said she was finally being recognised for her “hard-hitting” journalism (she won the BBC News and Factual Award), and cursed her success on The Great British Bake Off, saying she’s now accosted regularly in toilets by women looking for baking tips. “I don’t know how to make a choux bun. I can barely boil an egg!”
As for the men in the room, let’s just say Philip Glenister was a lucky man. He was the top totty in the room (Working Title’s Tim Bevan seemed to have his admirers too), with Miranda starting the Glenister jokes by saying that she’d now be able to tell her mother that they’d had a hot date together - “Philip Glenister is in the room, so technically we’ve had lunch.” She later introduced him on stage by saying, “he has a todger, it’s Philip Glenister.”
Still, DCI Gene Hunt might not have been the popular face in the room, that was probably the daughter of scientist and TV presenter Dr. Margaret Aderin-Pocock, who won the talkbackTHAMES New Talent Award. Aderin-Pocock brought her adorable offspring on stage with her to accept the prize, calling her a “well-travelled baby.” Cue a huge room full of awwws.
All in all, it was an inspiring celebration of good women and good work.
