Highly anticipated Finnish-German-Australian coproduction Iron Sky has scooped both the Silver Méliès and the Audience Award at this year’s Brussels International Film Festival.
The Silver Méliès, a well-regarded European film genre award, allows the winners to compete for the Golden Méliès, which is given out later this year at the Sitges Film Festival.
The film’s director, Timo Vuorensola, was particularly pleased to receive the audience award, “The crowd cheered, laughed, applauded, booed and screamed jokes and comments during the screening. It was a unique experience, and winning an audience prize at such a festival is a great honour.”
Also amongst the winners was Nick Murphy’s The Awakening, which scooped the Golden Raven – the festival’s major prize – and Alejandro Brugués’ zombie-comedy Juan de los Muertos (Juan of the Dead), which picked up a Silver Raven, as did Takashi Shimizu’s 3D horror Tormented.
The Thriller prize was won by The Whistleblower, which is directed by Larysa Kondracki and stars Rachel Weisz as a Nebraska cop.
Elsewhere, the 7th Orbit Prize went to Shion Sono’s Himizu.
