For the fifth consecutive year five directors have been selected for the initiative targeted at emerging filmmakers of African nationality and residence. Each will receive $10,000.
The winning filmmakers for 2012 are:
Vincent Moloi (South Africa) for Berea;
Jeremiah Mosese (Lesotho) for Mosongoa (The Mocked One);
Ekwa Msangi-Omari (Tanzania) for Soko (The Market);
Samantha Nell (South Africa) for One Way Ticket; and
William Nicholson (South Africa) for The Second Law.
“This year we have a dynamic group of filmmakers who will be telling stories that span genres and generations,” Focus Features CEO James Schamus said. “Everyone at Focus is excited to be collaborating with them.”
Producer Kisha Cameron Dingle, who serves as programme director of Africa First, added: “Africa continues to be a region rich with filmmaking potential, and the talented men and women we have selected this year embody it.”
