The 1985 film is a portrait of acclaimed Japanese author and playwright Yukio Mishima, played by Ken Ogata, who died last month.
As well as Schrader's direction, John Bailey's cinematography, Eiko Ishioka's sets and costumes and Philip Glass's score have been highly influential.
The deal for all rights outside of North America and Japan, was brokered by Fortissimo Co-Chair Wouter Barendrecht and Zoetrope's James Mockoski and producer Tom Luddy.
Barendrecht described the acquisition as a 'real honour.'
