Fox International Productions (FIP) is teaming with China Lion Film Distribution to release Wuershan’s The Butcher, The Chef And The Swordsman in North America, Australia and New Zealand.
The Mandarin-language film screened last year at both the Toronto and Pusan film festivals where it was presented by US director and producer Doug Liman. The stylised martial arts thriller is a co-production between FIP, Taihe Universal Film Investment Co and First Cuts Features. Daniel Yu and Tang Xiru produced.
The film will open date-and-date in North America, Australia and New Zealand on March 17. In North America it will be screened via China Lion’s exclusive deals to supply Chinese-language product to AMC in the US and Toronto and Cineplex for Vancouver.
“We are honored that Fox International Productions is working with China Lion on this fantastic picture. We believe that as well as being keenly anticipated by our core Chinese audience in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Toronto and Vancouver, the film will have the ability to cross over to a wider mainstream American audience,” said China Lion CEO Milt Barlow.
FIP president Sanford Panitch said: “We were thrilled when China Lion approached us to be a partner on the distribution of this genre defying film and we felt their unique experience providing films for the Chinese Diaspora would be a significant asset working with us in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.”
